Explore the beautiful interface and powerful features that make language learning effortless
Break free from pre-packaged lessons. Import articles from websites, paste text directly, or upload PDF documents and EPUB e-books. Whether reading Spanish news, Japanese novels, Korean webtoons, or French literature, Wisteria Reader empowers you to learn from content that genuinely interests you.
Syosetu — 小説家になろう, usually shortened to なろう — is the largest home of free Japanese web novels anywhere: over a million なろう系 isekai, fantasy, romance and slice-of-life serials, most of which will never get an official English release. For a Japanese learner it is close to an unlimited supply of authentic, native-written, constantly-updating reading material, and it is free.
The catch is the page around the prose. Every chapter arrives wrapped in banner ads, interstitials, sidebar promos and inline blocks that shift the text as they load. On a phone screen that leaves a thin column of novel surrounded by everything else, and it is a genuinely tiring way to read a long serial.
Wisteria Reader fixes the reading half of that. Paste a chapter URL into the app and it pulls in the chapter text — just the prose — and stores it in your library. From then on you are reading in Wisteria Reader's own view: an ad-free, distraction-free page with no banners, no interstitials, no sidebar and nothing jumping around mid-sentence. Your font, your line height, your light or dark theme, and the whole screen given over to the novel.
The same import works for other Japanese reading sources — カクヨム, Aozora Bunko, news articles, EPUB light novels and PDFs — and for the other 22+ languages Wisteria Reader supports.
Experience precise sentence-by-sentence translations with synchronized highlighting. Watch each sentence illuminate in both source and translated text, making it effortless to understand exactly what each phrase means. Navigate using intuitive swipe gestures or our smart sentence slider while maintaining perfect context.
All translations are cached for offline access to your favorite content.
Wisteria Reader's text-to-speech system brings content to life with dual audio playback. Hear both source language and translation with independent speed controls. Perfect pronunciation through native-like speech, then reinforce understanding with translations. Autoplay mode creates an immersive, hands-free experience perfect for commuting or exercising.
Choose system-installed voices for offline learning or connect to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech for premium, natural-sounding narration.

Wisteria Reader is on Google Play for Android phones and tablets, and on the App Store for iPhone and iPad (it also runs on Apple silicon Macs). Both listings are free to install, with an optional one-time Lifetime Premium purchase inside the app.
Yes. The app was renamed from Duet Reader to Wisteria Reader in version 1.2.1. It is the same app on the same store listings, so an existing install simply updates to the new name and keeps your library.
Yes. Paste the chapter URL and Wisteria Reader imports the chapter text into your library, where you read it in the app's own reader with side-by-side translation, audio and grammar analysis.
It is not an ad blocker and it does not change syosetu.com itself. What it does is import the chapter text and render it in Wisteria Reader's own reader — and that reader has no ads, no interstitials and no sidebar in it. So the reading experience is ad-free even though the website is untouched.
Yes. Most なろう series have no official or fan translation, so Wisteria Reader translates them for you sentence by sentence. You can read English only, Japanese only, or both side by side with synchronised highlighting — which is the mode most learners end up using.
Yes. Dual audio reads the chapter aloud in Japanese, in English, or alternating between the two, so an imported backlog turns into listening practice for a commute or a walk.
No. The side-by-side view means you can start on a series well above your level and lean on the English as much as you need, tapering off as you improve. The AI grammar analysis explains any sentence you cannot parse — particles, conjugation and clause structure — so a hard paragraph becomes a lesson instead of a wall.
Once a chapter is imported it lives on your device, and the on-device translation models run without a connection. Import a few chapters on Wi-Fi and the whole backlog is readable on a plane or underground.
The free tier covers 3 imports a day, which is enough to keep up with most serials. Lifetime Premium is a one-time purchase for unlimited imports, translations and bilingual audio — no subscription.
Yes. The same URL import handles カクヨム, Aozora Bunko, news sites and general web articles, and you can also load EPUB e-books and PDFs. It works across all 23+ supported languages, not just Japanese.
