Writeline
Privacy Policy
Short version. Writeline keeps your log on your phone. There is no account, no server and no sync, and we never see what you write. The app sends nothing from your log unless you ask it to: when you export a copy, or open a place in a map app. Your phone’s own iCloud or Google backup can include your log. The app also asks Apple or Google whether you own the one-time unlock, without sending anything from your log.
1Who we are
Writeline is made by Spicy Ginger Labs LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the Writeline app on iPhone and Android and everyone who uses it. Questions go to spicy.ginger.labs@gmail.com.
2What Writeline stores
Everything Writeline keeps is stored on your phone, in the app’s private storage:
- Entries: when it happened, the line you wrote, the optional thought, its type, and whether it left you uplifted or drained.
- Photos: each one you attach, saved at a smaller size. Writeline removes the camera’s details except where the photo was taken. That location stays with the photo, even if you don’t put it on the map, and is included in any export.
- People, places and tags: the ones your entries mention, and any aliases you give them.
- Type words: the words Writeline uses to suggest an entry’s type and whether it was uplifting or draining, including any you add or change.
- Settings: how the app looks, whether the evening reminder is on and when, whether the lock is on, when you last exported, and whether you own the one-time unlock.
Whether you own the unlock is also kept in your phone’s secure storage. On iPhone this survives deleting the app, so a reinstall knows about your unlock right away.
We run no server, so we receive nothing. On Android, Writeline is built without permission to use the internet, so it cannot go online at all.
3Permissions
Photos and camera (optional). Used only when you attach a photo. Writeline gets only the photo you choose and never reads your photo library.
Files. Used only to export or import. An export goes wherever you send it; an import reads only the file you pick.
Notifications (optional). Used only for the evening reminder, and asked for when you turn it on. The reminder is a short line asking what happened today, never anything you wrote. Your phone shows it at the time you chose, and nothing is sent anywhere to deliver it. On Android, the app can also vibrate for it and set it again after a restart.
Face ID, Touch ID or your fingerprint (optional). Used only for the lock, once you turn it on. Your phone checks your face, fingerprint or passcode and tells Writeline only whether it matched. Writeline never receives, stores or sends any of it.
Nothing else. Writeline does not ask for your microphone, location or contacts. If you dictate with your keyboard, the keyboard does the listening, under its maker’s privacy policy. The world map is built in, so viewing it loads nothing from the internet.
4What leaves your phone
Writeline never sends your log to us. These are the only ways anything from Writeline leaves your phone:
- When you export: you can export your whole log, with or without photos, to wherever you choose. Writeline never sends it anywhere on its own. Importing it later merges it back in without duplicates.
- When you open a place in a map app: Writeline gives the map app that place’s coordinates, not its name or anything from your entries, and only when you ask. The map app’s privacy policy covers what it does next.
- When your phone backs up: if iCloud or Google device backup is on, the backup includes your log. Apple and Google run those backups under their own privacy policies. Writeline has no backup service of its own.
- When the app checks your purchase: now and then, such as when it opens, Writeline asks Apple’s or Google’s billing on your phone what the unlock costs and whether you own it, so a purchase from another phone isn’t lost. Nothing from your log is sent, and the answer stays on your phone. We never receive your name, email address or payment details.
- Crash reports: Writeline has no crash-reporting code. If you’ve turned on analytics sharing in your phone’s settings, Apple or Google may receive anonymous crash data from your phone, with nothing from your entries. You can turn this off in your phone’s privacy settings.
5What Writeline does not do
- No account, email address or login.
- No analytics or telemetry tools, such as Google Analytics or Firebase.
- No ads or ad identifiers.
- No selling or sharing of personal information. We have none to sell.
- No training machine-learning models on what you write.
- No payment details. Apple or Google takes the payment for the one-time unlock, and their privacy policies cover it.
6Children
Writeline is not directed at children under 13, or under the minimum age where you live. We hold no data on a server, so we have no child’s data to keep or delete.
7Your rights
Laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA may give you the right to access, correct, delete or port the personal data a company holds about you. We hold none; your data is on your phone, under your control:
- Access and portability: export your log from Settings.
- Correction: edit or delete your entries in the app.
- Deletion: erase everything from Settings. This removes all your entries, photos and any export still in the app’s own folder from this phone. Uninstalling the app does the same.

8Security
Writeline relies on your phone’s protections: private app storage, disk encryption, and system control over your photos and files. Since Writeline sends nothing on its own, the best protection for your log is a passcode or biometric lock on your phone and up-to-date software. Writeline’s own lock can add a second check before the app opens, but it doesn’t replace your phone’s lock. No storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot promise absolute security.
9Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. If a change materially affects how your information is handled, the app will tell you before it takes effect.

The same policy is in the app, at Settings → PRIVACY → PRIVACY POLICY. Both copies are updated together and carry the same date.
